On May 27th, Enterprise Saint John brought together a group of passionate leaders who want to solve some of our greatest economic challenges through ideas and action. 150 participants gathered at the Lily Lake Pavillion. Together we learned a new problem-solving methodology and explored how we might:
- increase investment
- increase exports
- strengthen our workforce
- reduce barriers to growth
- strengthen existing assets
- increase innovation
I was asked to pitch this challenge: How might we better position our community to attract outside investment? My role was to explain the challenge in 90 seconds in order to assemble a sub-group of people in the room that were ready to role up their sleeves and generate ideas on how to address the challenge. It was an intense day of discussion. So many great ideas came out but each group was asked to chose only 2 actionable items to move forward. Ours were:
- Create a “100 Investors Who Care” initiative. Investors could donate time, talent, mentorship or money – to show investment culture in Saint John.
- Recruit and coordinate a “Social Media Army” to sell Saint John as a place to invest.
At the end of the day, the 100 Investors Who Care initiative had gained the most traction with Tim Ryan (Fundy Engineering) putting his name forth as a committee chair. We also recruited several volunteers to populate the committee. I put my name forward as Tim’s “committee vice chair”.
